Samael Novenary (SAM-ay-el No-VEEN-ary) is the cavalier primary to Anastasia the First, and part of the original sixteen disciples to serve the Emperor at Canaan House after the Resurrection.

Biography

History

Samael Novenary and his necromancer, Anastasia, were part of the second generation of disciples to Canaan House (along with Cyrus and Valancy Trinit, and Cytherea and Loveday Heptane). The circumstances of their invitation to join the Emperor are lost to history.

As Anastasia and Cassiopeia delved into the mysteries of necromancy, they became convinced of the existence of "perfect lyctorhood," or the ability to ascend to Lyctor without ending the life of their cavalier. When Anastasia and Samael decided they were ready to attempt their theory, they invited the Emperor to spectate.

According to the Emperor, they had the theory correct, but something went wrong. Anastasia was panicked and was unable to get Samael's soul fully inside of her. He claims that both were in mortal danger and that he killed Samael to protect her.

There is no known description of Samael Novenary's appearance or personality.

• Black Chain: Samael Novenary's black chain is described as chain of "death's head" made of black, Drearburh steel, weighted at one end with lead-filled pelvis. After his death, the black chain was preserved atop the Anastasian monument.

Relationships

Anastasia the First

While the precise details of Anastasia and Samael's bond are unknown, his willingness to follow her to First House and attempt untried, potentially fatal necromancy speaks to his dedication and loyalty. When their Lyctorhood failed and Samael was killed, Anastasia asked the Emperor to end her life. Though she eventually accepted his refusal and went on to found the Ninth House, she entombed his black chain upon the Anastasian monument—a tomb reserved for the most revered of Ninth House warriors.
